Creation

For the Christian early childhood professional, the spiritual development of the young child is at the heart and center of our actions, interactions, curriculum planning and learning activities. From there, all other concepts are taught, always bringing the child to a realization that the God of Heaven is a relevant God who is interested and involved in every aspect of our lives.

True developmentally appropriate practice ensures that all units of study are meaningful and relevant to the young child as an individual. Even with young infants, songs, visual aids and personal attention help to teach these concepts, preparing them for more in-depth learning during their toddler, preschool and prekindergarten years.

This introductory lesson focuses on the literal, six-day creation story told in the book of Genesis of the Bible. The learning activities are samples purposefully chosen to teach concepts related to the creation of the world while at the same time teaching foundational, concrete, academic concepts.

Since this is an introductory lesson, several of the learning activities are actually foundational routines for classroom management and behavioral training. All other learning activities are purposed for concept acquisition and can easily lead to long-term projects or further units of study. Each learning domain is addressed and offers learning opportunities for children of all learning styles and strengths.

Future lessons will continue with Biblical themes while drawing in academic content. Additional content, research and narratives on various subjects relevant to early childhood education can be located by contacting Christine Gillan Byrne through Young Child Ministries.
