Spirit compatible instruction is a group of strategies which help to create a classroom in which the Holy Spirit is free to do His marvelous work. Creating such an environment requires that we look at all aspects of a classroom and ensure that it is physically, emotionally, academically, and spiritually safe. One of the primary strategies for doing so is instruction in “light-skills.”
“What’s a ‘light-skill?’” you ask. A light-skill is a character trait resulting from the work of the Holy Spirit in a person’s life. They are so called because they are skills or habits which allow the light of Jesus to shine forth from us. You may be more used to calling them “fruit of the Spirit.” The reason that we call them light-skills instead is because they include more than the items outlined in the fruit of the Spirit lists, though all the items can be found somewhere in Scripture.
Adventist schools exist primarily for the purpose of developing the character of Jesus in students, but just how are teachers to go about this process? The documents which follow provide a plan which will help to create a culture of respect and responsibility and one in which students can steadily grow into the image of Jesus. Ubiquitous instruction using light-skills is one important part of the process. One word of caution: unless the teacher is under the on-going direction of the Holy Spirit him/herself light-skills can be transmitted as just more legalistic obligations. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, however, they are amazing tools to transform young (and not so young) lives.
